Research Paper In any job, there is a pay scale difference between entry level positions to managers and to the highest executives. Many people assume that we are just paid solely based upon our position; where in some cases, not all, this is very true. This paper will focus on the question â€Å"Why do executives receive such high compensation and how it affects our democracy?† In corporate America bonuses and compensation differentiate amongst the working forces; the most important factor in the recruiting and hiring process of the best talents are the compensation policies and packages. Also, the attractiveness of salaries and bonuses incentivize potential candidates to seek out these top corporations for employment. Due to the severity of this gap in pay even lawmakers and politicians have gained interest into this issue, particularly the democratic party. The way in which they do this is through pay packages. Executive pay packages differs widely from standard salary or hourly employee compensation. Most executives are paid through contingent compensation and structured with rewards. They utilize six compensation components; Base Salary, Short-Term incentive, Long-Term Incentive, Employee Benefits, Perquisites, Severance/Change-in-Control Payments. All six of these components are structured into a pay plan by a corporation or institution’s Compensation Committee. This committee is made up of directors who are handpicked by the Board of Directors. The committee acts independently and works based on a compensation consultant who reviews the recommendations to help manage themselves. Why should we be worried about how much executives make? As I grew older, the classic Cincinnati tradition of summers at King’s Island Amusement Park became a major part of my life. This is strange because many of its rides mirror the same ups and down, loops, twists and turns, thrills and let downs that I have experienced in my own life. Looking back at my life up to this point, I can honestly say I have no regrets. There may have been something I wished to change or something I wished had gone differently, but with every obstacle I have had to overcome, as well as with every perfect moment, I have developed and become more of the individual I always w anted to be. The Vortex From the time I was a toddler I have been plagued by change. At the age of two, my parents divorced and I was left to begin this journey of broken relationships. It did not take very long for me to get used to the partial custody way of life, which consists of traveling back and forth from house to house. I always remember my Minnie Mouse suitcase that held my favorite belongings and clothes, the only constant in my life between houses. As my life approached the drop that I was in for, I was introduced to two people that my parents started dating. I still hear stories about my skepticism of these people preceding the large heartache that was about to push me over the edge, much like on the Vortex where we climbed 120 feet into the air only to be thrown 100 feet to the ground seconds later. This drop epitomizes the remarriage of my parents only a few months apart. The remarriage of both my mother and father was hard for me because I was still very young at this point and I was used to having them all to myself. For the first time in my life, I was faced with a challenge where I learned I couldn’t always get what I wanted. Little did I know at that point in the game, my parents remarrying would be the groundwork for a bittersweet future, in the sense that I would come to despise my step dad yet love my step mom more than I could have ever imagined. Within the ten-year relationship between my step dad and my mom, I came to distance myself from that side of my family. My step dad’s insane discipline regimen was awful. He would ground me for staying up later than my 8 o’clock bedtime for reading. Being a 7th and 8th grader at this point I felt completely trapped. He would constantly yell at my three sisters and me, and I still remember the times where I had to bring my little sisters into my room because my parents were fighting. It was there where my sisters and I grew an inseparable bond and I became like a third parent to them. Although I loved my sisters very much, being fitted with the burden of parenting my younger siblings in eighth grade was quite heavy. There were many times where I cried myself to sleep. It finally got to the point that I couldn’t take it any more and I sat my mom down and told her I was going to move in with my dad and step mom. It literally broke her heart when I did, but distance was the best thing for me. She grudgingly allowed it. It was the summer before my freshman year when I was finally all moved into a new house with Dad and Paige. Starting a new school, high school at that, and adapting to a whole new way of life turned out to be the best change ever to wash over me. Paige and I grew so close. She literally has become my mother. Being adopted and coming from a broken home herself, she understood my situation and I have truly never grown to love and appreciate anyone more. She became the most stable person in my life, the one who helped me to become a strong and independent person. She taught me that being independent was something that no one could take away from me no matter how awful my parents acted. Tomb Raider Expedition In the back of King’s Island lies a building that remains closed half of the time. Tomb Raider, as the fans affectionately call it, straps you in and gyrates, shakes you up and down, back and forth, inside and out, forcing you to endure longer than usual minutes upside down over caverns spinning out of control. This is what my life had become, a crazy ride spinning all over the place, and, just when you think it has stopped, catapults you backwards and upside down. I had just started my second year in competitive cheerleading. We would travel all around the east coast competing against the nation’s best and it was the most fun I had had in high school. I practiced with the team for months, never missing a rehearsal or meeting. I worked out with more energy and kept my spirits higher than anyone else on my team or any of the other ones. It was the best week of my life leading up to the first competition- and it was the day before our first competition when I tore my AC L, MCL, and Lateral Meniscus. I was devastated. And what’s worse, I was forced to go into surgery followed by six months of physical therapy. My injury caused me to go into a depression. I refused to go out or hang out with my friends, and I literally cried for a month straight. I felt miserable. It wasn’t until Paige came to me one afternoon and said, â€Å"Courtney, go ahead and cry because this is the last night that I am going to let you do it. Starting tomorrow you are going to pull yourself out of this depression because only you can do that. It is time to stop feeling sorry for yourself, get over it and make the best out of the situation you are given.† These words became like fresh air to me. I realized that there was nothing I could do, but to use my energy to get better. Like Tomb Raider which goes forever yet stops sooner than you would expect, my depression abruptly grinded to a halt. Outer Limits Unfortunately, although I was over the depression, the worst had only just begun. Hidden between a classic midway ride one could find a bunker carved out in a mock area 51 display. Here lies Outer Limits, formerly known as Flight of Fear. After waiting in line you are strapped into a spaceship and the attendants begin counting down 3†¦2†¦1†¦ From zero to sixty in two seconds flat you are thrust into a blinding bright light then out into a dark, empty room where all you can see before you is miles and miles of twisted steel. The tracked lies twisted in a giant ball almost as if it had no order. Both sets of my parents decided to get divorced yet again. It was in the summer before my senior year and it was nearly cataclysmic. I was happy that my mom and step dad were getting a divorce, but I would never wish what my mom had to go thorough on my worst enemy. Rob fought for every last dime, and since my mom was a stay at home mom, the little she was given was easily expe nded. He fought dirty and led my mom through almost a year and a half of legal drama that resulted where it was impossible for anyone to come out a winner. On other side of that grimy table my dad and Paige getting divorced was worse. Paige and I had grown even closer and I was not ready to leave her. However with this divorce Paige would be reduced to legally being just my good friend. The struggle that resulted with this was a tough decision: with whom should I move in- my single mom, my single dad, or Paige? The choice I made was hard for both of parents because I chose Paige. She had become more than a mother to me and had tried her best throughout this entire ordeal to make the transition as smooth on me as possible. While the ride is infamous for its crazy twists and turns, it is nice enough to let you get out on flat ground instead of just dumping you on your head. The Beast Deep in the woods of King’s Islands’ back lot remains an enigma 30 years in the making. Once the longest wooden roller coaster in the world, The Beast rocks you like a hurricane as you journey through the woods â€Å"escaping The Beast.† But The Beast has a unique feature, different from other roller coasters. When calm is reached, the train then begins a climb up a second hill leading to a ferocious attack from its famed double helix. After two years of watching my mom’s struggle as a single parent with four children I saw her go from bad to worse. I saw my mother fall from everything that she had once stood for. It was perhaps the darkest hour I have had so far in my nineteen years in existence. My mother committed the darkest deed and oldest sin in the book; she had attempted to commit suicide. It is an awful feeling to realize that your own mother felt that helpless and that neither my sisters nor I could have been a reason enough to live. I again fe lt like I had to be the parent of my sisters and my mother. She spent two weeks in a psychiatric ward and I thought I had never seen my mom at a lower point. I was sadly mistaken because a little over three months later I received a call from my aunt while I was at school that my mom had been checked into a rehab facility for alcohol and pills. In my mind I couldn’t and still can’t understand why my mom became addicted. After getting out of rehab, she was forced to go back into rehab two more times. Each time I think it will be the calm signaling the end of the ride, but it inevitably leads to more hills and more helixes. The Scrambler Separating the Nickelodeon Universe kiddy park and the intense, more daring, adult rides, the Scrambler is not only a representation of the transition from my high school life to college life, but it is a ride that literally scrambles you. In its fast circular speeds the cars spin, but the actually car is spinning within itself. This causes a jerking motion that literally slams you from one side to the other and culminating a force of gravity that smashes you together with the people in your car but keeps you laughing it up the entire time. Dealing with all of the issues with my mother and starting my first completely independent life as a college student at University of Kentucky, I was bombarded with other issues that effect young adults. Figuring out how to make an easy transition from high school life to college life luckily came effortless to me. I have dealt with the confusing boy issues, which have stressed me out more than I have wanted and the overall issue of learning to balance all of my time with the massive amounts of homework I am given weakly. Although it is a struggle, the struggle is on a much lower scale and something I can most definitely handle. I am still being jolted around, and although it is all very confusing, it is finally the type of ride I can enjoy. As the sun is setting and the day is through throngs of people start pouring out of the amusement park and heading towards their cars, children become sluggish, teenagers are joyous and adults are just glad the day is over. My time in the amusement park is far form over. I still have many rides left in me and many new endeavors to explore. Several years of ups and downs will soon follow, but with my development thus far I at least have enough insight to better understand with the changes and issues that come my way. I have become a person that has evolved over so much. I am still searching for my soul purpose and what I am going to do with my life, however I do know what I will never be. I will never ever have to worry about money or ever fall into the same path as my mother. I will take her mistakes and better myself from it. It is funny that despite all of the divorce in my life, that I still do believe in love and that it can last forever. All I know is that with every decision I make I will choose to be better because I have seen just how low a person can get. I may not know what the future has in store for me, but rest assured that I will be different form the rest. I can guarantee that my future has something incredible in store for it and only time will tell what will come of it.

Joshua and the Shepherd Copyright 1990 by Joseph Girzone Published by Simon & Schuster Inc. The book Joshua and The Shepherd is a novel, in which the author creates a model for the Catholic Church. The author, Joseph Girzone, presents the reader with many changes that could be made to the Catholic Church. He writes on the possible impact of these changes and the attempts that certain Church members take to block them. In reading this book you will quickly ascertain that the author is very vivid in painting a picture in you minds eye of the incidence he is describing. In the first paragraph, of the book, he goes into a description of the beautiful day that the story starts on. Throughout the book this style is continued. You can almost feel a small presence of God in the weather and scenery that he brings to life in his writing. The book opens with the Consecration of the new bishop, David Campbell, for the diocese that most of the events in the book take place. This bishop is the main character in the book. The plot centers on the changes that he tries to make within the Catholic Church. After David is consecrated he has a revelation. In this revelation the Holy Spirit moves David to do everything in his power to shift the focus of the church to one of unity and forgiveness, as opposed to a church that is bound by strict laws. The second character that is brought in after David's revelation is named Joshua. The author never specifically says who Joshua is, but you get the impression that he is either a prophet or possibly Jesus himself. Through out the book David puts himself on the line for his beliefs. Transcending many of the self imposed barriers on religion, that humans have erected over the years, was a key point that David focused on. With constant support and fellowship from his friend Joshua, and the Pope, he eventually succeeds with his efforts and establishes unity of almost all Christians within his diocese. In the later part of the story after Joshua has succeeded he is sent away to a quite, poor, and remote diocese to"punish" him for everything he did to change the Catholic Church. He never loses faith though and in the end he is voted to be the new Pope when his friend the old Pope dies. I feel that this book is excellent reading material for the class. It goes hand in hand with the textbook we are using. Allan Schreck and Joseph Girzone are obviously of common thought when it comes to promoting unity among Christians. When you read the novel you get a feel for a lot of terms used in the catholic church. Under most circumstances these terms are foreign to typical Protestant Christians. They make sense and have more meaning to me now that I have read the novel. There are many things that I personally like about the book Joseph and the Shepherd. It portrays the catholic church in a light that I have never really seen before. You are given an example of an almost perfect utopia for the unification of all Christians. However, I do feel that the author used an un- realistic time frame for the changes manifested in the church. In reality I think it would take much longer for David Campbell to see the fruit of all his labor. But, I really do like the ideas that are presented. The specific scenarios that David finds himself in are very moving. These scenarios are brought to life so well that you can almost experience some of the feelings that were inspiring David to do the work he felt called to do. The selfless way that he reaches out to Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, and Jews really makes a lot of sense to me. I like the way the way that David looks beyond "religion" and concentrates on the true basics of Christianity. He denounces the legalistic hypocrisy of some church leaders and reaches out to all people with a love that reflects that of Christ's. This is definitely a book that I would recommend to a wide variety of people. Structure and History of Cobblestone Houses The cobblestone house is one of the most identifiable structures in Western New York. These houses date back to the early 1800’s when many of the towns that people in the Rochester area live in were being founded. When driving down many of the streets you can find these houses scattered on the left and the right. They are marvelous to look at and are also strange because they are some of the only houses in the area to be built out of stones, not lumber. These houses were in all probability made at first by someone who was too poor to pay for brick, or afford some kind of more expensive siding. Rocks are easily found and also insulate fairly well. These rocks were lined where the siding of the house would be and mortar was used to set the rocks into the house. Once the mortar set, it could not be broken easily. The mortar resembles what today would be concrete. It is very solid and nothing will penetrate. This makes it a clear favorite for the houses in New York due to the harsh winters. In Rochester particularly you need the extra protection. The winters in New York are the worst any where in the country where the average snowfall a winter is well over one hundred inches of snow. This allows for the insulated rocks to keep a more constant temperature than the lumber alternative which would allow much more heat to escape the house and cool it down. Conversely in the summers, where it is extremely warm the rocks allow a ki nd of air conditioning due to their relative lack of conductivity of heat. Cobblestone houses became extremely popular around the 1830’s in particular. This era marked a forever changing point in the history of both the United States and New York. The Erie Canal, a waterway connecting the Hudson River to the Great Lakes was being constructed. Right in the middle of it all was the metropolitan area around Rochester. It seems like every rock that was dug out of the ground during the excavation of the Erie Canal was used in a Cobblestone house.

Even though paying college athletes may be fair in some people’s eyes, there are many negatives to this topic that could affect college sports for today’s athletes and the future of their sport. The NCAA and their colleagues all have different views and they vary from being supportive and backing up the idea, to being one hundred percent against it. No matter what type of fan it is and no matter what sport it is, there are positive and negative views on this argument and the variety of disagreement is astonishing. The most positive outlook on this is in most eyes would be that paying the athletes would be fair, and that they deserve at least some money. And even though that is without a doubt the most popular opinion, there are still many more. If the NCAA decides to pay the students, a good way to keep paying college athletes under control is by paying the student athletes for certain things, the key word is student. One plan is too pay the athlete as long as him or her maintains a certain grade point average. â€Å"If we want to reward college athletes and dramatically reduce the cheating that goes on in college sports, we should consider paying student athletes $1,000 per month during their four years of eligibility, providing they maintain a pre-determined grade point average† (Freeman, Marv). This plan would not only keep the student athletes in school, but it would make them do well and succeed in school. Even though some fans of pro sports may want to see a star player leave and go to the pros after one or maybe two years, education is still very important and so is graduating. This strategy would be a great motivator and would without a doubt grab the attention of the player’s parents. Another positive affect is that without a doubt the amount of money brought into colleges and universities would increase by large amounts because it would attract more student athletes to go to college. This plan could affect all levels of student athletes in a more than positive way; it could change the future of student athletes forever. The controversy on player’s safety is a very big issue in pro sports, but you don’t see nearly as much attention on it in college sports. There is no doubt that injuries occur more often in pro sports, but that doesn’t mean they don’t happen in college sports, and the NCAA really doesn’t protect their players very much at all. A solution to this is to have the players sign a contract for the college or university they attend. The contract would contain a variety of things, but the two most important things would be a certain amount of money and then a health care plan for the athlete. Lifetime of health insurance and benefits is very important to athletes, and remember not all student athletes go pro so they don’t have the luxury of pro sport health benefits. This plan would without a doubt make more players not only want to stay in college to receive these benefits, but it would also make student athletes want to attend a college and not have to worry about being disabled as an adult. Joe Branch, a great high school football player, told reporter Joe Nocera that he had turned down a scholarship to play football at Georgia Tech because, â€Å"I wouldn’t have had any shoulders left if I had played football in college.† This man turned down the opportunity of a lifetime because of the fact he knew he wouldn’t have health benefits for playing college football, so he had to give up his dream. This plan would be great for the NCAA and their athletes now and especially in the future. To every controversial topic there are positives, and there are negatives. In this case a huge problem is, where is all the money for the players going to come from? There truly is no answer for this, that’s why paying the athletes isn’t even close to becoming a done deal. According to Mike Higgins of USA today, only 20 NCAA division 1-football programs make a profit. And considering the fact that college football is the most popular NCAA sport, the number of other sport programs making a profit can’t be a very large number at all. Another question that can’t be answered is, do you pay all the athletes? There is no doubt that men’s basketball and football bring in the most money for their schools, athletically speaking, but you can’t only pay them. According to http://www.statisticbrain.com/ there are over 420,000 student athletes and combined in Division 1 and 2 there are 26 different types of athletic programs. The amount of student athletes and athletic programs makes it almost nearly impossible to have enough money to pay every single athlete male and female. This also puts small schools at a huge disadvantage. Schools like Notre Dame, Texas, Florida, Ohio State, and Alabama already have huge reputation advantages over small schools, but if the NCAA starts paying their athletes the bigger schools like the ones I mentioned will be able to offer so much more because schools like that already make more than enough money. Overall, this point in the argument really shows that if the NCAA starts paying their athletes it would truly take a  miracle to come up with that kind of money, and if they ever did come up with the money, it wouldn’t be fair to many schools across the country. One of the many reasons why the NCAA is considering paying their athletes is because they believe it will stop all the â€Å"under the table deals.† A solution like that will not stop corruption in the NCAA. That kind of solution is just the easy way out, and it won’t stop the people who offer the student athletes money, cars, jewelry, tattoos, etc. because those kind of people will stop at nothing. If the NCAA truly wants to put a stop to players accepting or being offered gifts they need to enforce more discipline. According to Todd Pheifer of Yahoo News, â€Å"Cam Newton was ultimately â€Å"exonerated† by the NCAA while at Auburn, there were stories of an $180,000 payment that was demanded by Newton’s father for Cam to attend Mississippi State.† A young and naà ¯ve student athlete would take that kind of offer without even hesitating because the amount of money the NCAA is offering to pay the student athletes, couldn’t even come close to that. Overall, the main point of this is that if the NCAA believes that paying their athletes a certain amount of money is going to stop the offers and the greediness, they are going to need to come up with a better plan then that. Even though paying college athletes may be fair in some people’s eyes, there are many negatives to this topic that could affect college sports for today’s athletes and the future of their sport. As we see here, there are many great controversial arguments on this topic. The cutting off of the athletes money if their grades slip, also the health care plan would not only help the reputation of the NCAA, but it would no doubt make the game safer and assure the student athletes a better future. On the other hand, we still have no idea where the money would come from and who would they give it to. In conclusion, I don’t believe the NCAA should pay their student athletes, even though it may seem like the fair and just thing to do, there are just too many negatives and downfalls to this argument and in the end would more than likely put many colleges and universities into debt.
